Girls on Fire: The Gendered Outcomes of Burn Injuries

March 11, 2024

Inspired by, The Searing Disparity Between Burn Patients, an article co-authored by Laura Hoemeke, Dr. Rose Alenyo, and Natalie Meyers of ReSurge International, this event explores a hidden gender equity issue –– the intersection between gender disparities and severe burn injuries.

“Gender-based disparities are significant among burn injury epidemiology, treatment received, and outcomes for women with burns. Burns are not simply a health issue; they’re an economic, political, and societal issue. Reducing the inequity will require a comprehensive systems approach.”

– The Searing Disparity Between Burn Patients, Think Global Health

Globally, women and girls face unique risks for burn injury and challenges in accessing emergency and essential care, particularly surgical intervention and rehabilitation. If they are lucky to reach care, they are more likely to die in the hospital than their male counterparts.

At the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the G4 Alliance, ReSurge International, Physicians for Peace, Smile Train, and the Global Surgery Umbrella will host a special side event open to the public.

Featuring notable speakers like Dr. Rose Alenyo, a reconstructive surgeon from Uganda, and Natalia Ponce de Leon, an acid attack survivor and activist from Colombia, this panel will focus on the gender-specific impacts of injuries. We’ll discuss how stakeholders can work together to advance burn prevention, treatment, and recovery for girls and women in underserved areas worldwide.

ReSurge International will also be premiering ‘A Place at the Operating Table’, a short documentary film about the first generation of women reconstructive surgeons in Zimbabwe.

RSVP to secure a spot. Detailed information on the panelists coming soon.
