As we face overlapping global modern threats — pandemics, dis/misinformation, cyber security, and climate change, we are in what David McNair (Executive Director for Global Policy, The ONE Campaign) calls a “hinge moment” to come up with game-changing solutions. Historically, we’ve seen previous hinge moments lead to the establishment of new norms and systems, such as World War I leading to the League of Nations and the Great Depression leading to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. After more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and intersecting crises, we are in a hinge moment to address the critical actions that are needed to ensure a crisis like this pandemic does not happen again.

During this discussion with David McNair, we aim to draw on previous hinge moments to understand where we are today and to address candidly the key actions we must prioritize to reform existing institutions and set up new ones to better address our modern threats.
