How improving kidney health can transform health systems for all

Globally, more than 5 million people die from lack of access to treatments for kidney disease each year — and it’s projected to become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide by 2040.

According to the World Health Organization, the main noncommunicable diseases include cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. But current efforts to tackle NCDs often fail to address chronic kidney disease — a vastly underdiagnosed, progressive NCD frequently caused by diabetes, hypertension, or obesity.

This event hosted by Devex and AstraZeneca on the occasion of the 78th session of the U.N. General Assembly will explore the urgent need for improving access to and funding for the prevention and screening of chronic kidney disease. It will also discuss how diagnosing the disease before it progresses can have huge positive impacts on the environment. A new study shows that CKD has high environmental costs across all of its stages and that carbon emissions increase with the progression of the disease, with kidney replacement therapy causing the highest environmental impact.

So what are the current barriers to diagnostics for CKDs and how can health systems adopt a more holistic approach to NCD care and management?

We’ll bring together industry experts and leading global stakeholders to address kidney health within the broader UHC agenda, alongside NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, making it central to health policy.
