From Monrovia To New York: Advocating for proCHWs at UNGA

September 13, 2023

This year, two themes will dominate the health discourse at the United Nations General Assembly: universal health coverage (UHC) and pandemic preparedness and response (PPR). While these two discussions have occurred in siloes, there has been a strong overarching theme: the need for “equitable, people-centered and community-based primary care”. This can only be achieved through the integration of community health – and professional community health workers (proCHWs) – into the formal health system. This year, we shall be taking our movement to UNGA78: to ensure that all community health workers are set up for success by being salaried, skilled, supervised and supplied.

CHIC will hold a 60-minute virtual webinar to brief the proCHW community on how we can collectively leverage the UHC and PPR discussions to advocate for CHW integration in formal health systems. Leveraging the Monrovia Call-to-Action for community health, we will articulate the key calls to action to ensure that proCHWs are centered in global and country responses towards UHC and PPR. The session will empower us to speak truth to power by launching the largest-ever public-facing dashboard on proCHW policies to hold governments accountable for policy change. Together, we will make proCHWs the norm worldwide.
