Join Devex for a conversation with Rep. Ami Bera, M.D., member of Congress representing California’s sixth congressional district, U.S. House of Representatives.

Bera has introduced bipartisan legislation to strengthen the U.S. government’s ability to respond to antimicrobial resistance, identify new viral threats through genetic surveillance and enhanced genomic sequencing, and eliminate tuberculosis, among other critical issues.

Bera has also worked to put an end to the global gag rule, which prohibits foreign NGOs that receive U.S. global health funding from using those funds, or any other funds, to provide abortion care, referrals, or information. While President Joe Biden rescinded the policy after it was reinstated and expanded under the previous administration, only the U.S. Congress can make this repeal permanent.

In February, as a ranking member of the Indo-Pacific subcommittee, Bera along with a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill to give Biden new authority to support allies facing economic pressure from China.
