What to expect at UNGA77

September 15, 2022

The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) will bring together world leaders, activists, the private sector, and advocacy organizations, including many in the global health community. There is a lot on the agenda and high expectations to address climate change, COVID-19, and various conflicts around the world, all of which have exacerbated problems among the world’s most underserved.

Here’s what to watch for at UNGA77:

  • Addressing the back-tracking of progress on global health threats caused by COVID-19,
  • Recommitting to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, and
  • Recognizing the cross-section of climate and health.

The other big event that global health advocates will be watching closely is the Global Fund Replenishment Pledging Conference, hosted by the U.S. The Global Fund is seeking to raise the highest amount of funds ever, $18 billion over three years. Some donors have already made their commitments, while others will do so in the final lead-up or at the pledging conference itself.

As always attention will be stretched across a vast range of issues during UNGA, and even with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and additional health threats emerging, health will still be at the forefront of many conversations and side meetings.
