154th WHO Executive Board Agenda Item 22: Climate change, pollution and health
Below is a statement which Global Health Council shared at the 154th session of the World Health Organization’s Executive Board.
Global Health Council thanks the WHO Executive Board and Member States for the opportunity to make a statement on climate change and health.
Climate change is an existential threat that not only induces health emergencies but also jeopardizes achievement of Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. Immediate action is needed to proactively reduce climate hazards and bolster the resilience and sustainability of health systems. Thus, the health sector’s engagement in climate change policy discussions is critical.
We call on Member States to support the forthcoming resolution on climate change and health, and recommend it move forward for adoption at the 77th World Health Assembly, ensuring that the final text is as robust and ambitious as possible.
