World leaders say Covid isn’t over. But billions more are needed to fight it.

Global health activists want to see more urgency in fighting the pandemic as attention wanes.

World leaders from Canada to New Zealand pledged new money to continue the global pandemic response and set up a new fund to prepare for future health emergencies. But the pledges at a global Covid summit the White House hosted Thursday fell significantly short of what is needed to continue to fight Covid-19 worldwide.

That could leave millions of people across the globe, particularly in low-income countries, vulnerable to new, more dangerous variants. The world will miss the 70 percent vaccination target for each country by September set by the White House at its first global Covid summit last fall.
