Dialogue, insights and leadership for action and accountability: A special event series on the occasion of the 77th World Health Assembly (2 of 2)

May 29 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The combination of effects of climate change, conflicts, the cost-of-living crisis and COVID-19 aftermath are rolling back decades of progress, with far-reaching effects for the most vulnerable, in particular women, children and adolescents. The time has come for decisive and accelerated action to protect the promise and attain the Sustainable Development Goals for Women, Children and Adolescents.

In July 2020, Dec 2020, May 2021 and May 2022, Heads of State and Government, private business, donors, the UN, activists, and artists attended virtual summits that attracted more than 2,300 combined online views and 5,500 registrants from 110 countries. Since 2023, in person convenings were also organized to leverage an opportunity for stakeholders to convene on the occasion of the World Health Assembly (WHA) to align advocacy efforts under the themed advocacy series: Lives in the Balance.

The Lives in the Balance Series has been an essential space for learning, sharing and collaboration for prioritization and investment into maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and wellbeing. The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH)- the world’s largest alliance for women’s, children’s, and adolescent’s health, chaired by the Rt Hon. Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, brings stakeholders together to discuss joint efforts for this critical agenda.

At the 77th World Health Assembly two high-level “Lives in the Balance” events will be organized to prepare, highlight and consolidate critical discussions among WHA delegates:

  • Opening event with spotlight on maternal, newborn and child health, Sunday, 26 May 2024, 18:00-20:00, Vieux Bois
  • Investing in Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health with spotlight on adolescent well-being, Wednesday, 29 May 2024, 18:00-20:00, Fairmont Hotel

The dialogues will be organized in-person in Geneva and will be livestreamed to enable virtual participation. Interpretation will be provided in French and Spanish, and International Sign Language.
