WHA75: Agenda Item 13 – Sustainable Financing Report of the Working Group

May 23, 2022

Global Health Council presented the following statement at the 75th World Health Assembly for Agenda Item 13: Sustainable Financing: Report of the Working Group.

Global Health Council commends the efforts of Member States and the Working Group on Sustainable Financing to reach an agreement on recommendations to financially empower WHO. A stronger WHO is in the interest of all governments and their citizens. WHO has repeatedly shown, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, that it is an essential resource for protecting the health of all people. To meet the expectations the world has for WHO, we must provide the budget and resources that match its mandate.

The consensus reached by the Working Group is a tremendous first step to addressing WHO’s financial sustainability. Global Health Council is proud to join a letter of 80 partners calling on Member States to endorse the Working Group’s recommendations and increase the level of assessed contributions to 50% of the WHO base budget by the 2030-31 biennium, or sooner.

This is an historic opportunity to secure and sustainably finance WHO, and provide the support necessary for WHO to deliver on the Triple billion Targets and the promise of health for all.
