Statement from Global Health Council on Supreme Court Decision
Today’s Supreme Court decision to grant the Trump Administration’s request for a stay is a deep disappointment for the global health and development community and the millions of people whose lives depend on U.S. leadership and partnership. By allowing $4 billion in appropriated foreign assistance to remain frozen, and likely expire, the Court’s order undermines Congress’s constitutional power of the purse and leaves critical programs without the resources they urgently need.
While the Court emphasized that this ruling is preliminary, the consequences are immediate and devastating: lifesaving funds will not reach the communities and organizations working on the frontlines of health and development around the world.
Global Health Council remains steadfast in its commitment to fight for accountability and to ensure that U.S. foreign assistance is deployed as Congress intended, to strengthen health systems, advance equity, and save lives. We will continue to press forward, alongside our partners, until these principles are upheld.
