GHC Statement on CEPI Replenishment
GHC welcomes U.S. commitment to CEPI at Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit, urges policymakers more is needed
Washington, DC (March 9, 2022) – Global Health Council welcomes the announcement from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) of a new commitment to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) of $150 million over the next three years. This commitment will support CEPI’s five-year, $3.5 billion plan to reduce the risk of future pandemics, including accelerating the development of safe, effective, and globally accessible vaccines against emerging diseases to as little as 100 days.
“It is encouraging to see the U.S. government step up to contribute to CEPI’s life saving efforts fighting disease globally and helping the world prepare for the next pandemic. We hope this commitment is the first, but not the last, U.S. contribution in support of CEPI’s ambitious mission of protecting Americans and the world from future health threats,” said Elisha Dunn-Georgiou, President & CEO of Global Health Council.
We know additional funding will be needed to fulfill CEPI’s five-year plan, and we urge Congress to ensure CEPI is funded at no less than $200 million in a final Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 spending package. Global Health Council also urges the Biden administration to build on this initial pledge by requesting $200 million for CEPI in its forthcoming FY23 President’s Budget Request.
