Global Health Council Applauds House Passage of Global Health Security Act

September 23, 2020

Washington, DC (September 23, 2020) – Global Health Council applauds the passage of the Global Health Security Act of 2019 (H.R. 2166) by the House of Representatives. The Global Health Security Act, authored and introduced by Representatives Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Steve Chabot (R-OH) is bipartisan legislation that reaffirms the U.S. commitment to elevating global health security and the Global Health Security Agenda, an international partnership that works to build countries’ capacity to prepare for and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

“Before the pandemic, we knew that in our increasingly interconnected world, it wouldn’t take much for an outbreak to become widespread. Now, as the world grapples with COVID-19, it is clear that investing in preparedness is essential for saving lives and resources,” stated Loyce Pace, President and Executive Director of Global Health Council. “This legislation recognizes the need for a coordinated, robust, federal response and the critical leadership role the United States must continue to play, in global health security efforts. We are proud to have supported this bill since its introduction.”

Specifically, the Global Health Security Act strengthens interagency coordination on U.S. global health security activities and addresses the need for a permanent official responsible for coordinating between U.S. agencies during global health crises.

The Global Health Security Act is endorsed by thirteen leading global health organizations, including Global Health Council.
