The Status of Women in Agrifood Systems: An Armchair Discussion with Dr. Lauren Phillips and Dr. Vanya Slavchevska

April 24, 2023

RSVP

More than ten years ago, the UN FAO first examined the status of women in agriculture worldwide, illuminating the gender gap in productivity and explaining the impacts—on women’s agricultural output, national productivity, and global food security—of closing this gap. Today, in many respects, the gender gap in global agriculture has only widened. In its just-launched Status of Women in Agrifood Systems report, the UN FAO refocuses our attention on this central issue, analyzing the sources of inequality that constrain women’s participation in agrifood systems, describing policies that support gender equality and women’s empowerment, and explaining the benefits of women’s equal participation in agrifood systems for individual and global outcomes.

In what ways have gender gaps widened in the past decade, and in what ways have they narrowed? Which policies and programs have proven effective for closing these gaps? Ten years ago, awareness did not translate to adequate action; how can we do things differently, based on findings of the UN FAO’s present report?

Please join the CSIS Global Food Security Program on April 24 at 10:00am as we welcome Dr. Lauren Phillips, Deputy Director, and Dr. Vanya Slavchevska, Social Policy Officer, of the UN FAO’s Inclusive Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division for this in-depth discussion on the path to addressing gender inequalities in food systems.

This event is made possible through the generous support of the UN FAO North American Liaison Office.
