Universal Health Coverage (UHC) provides the promise of better-quality health care for more people around the world, regardless of their ability to pay. Increasingly, patients are presenting with multiple chronic conditions (MCC)– whether it is more than one noncommunicable disease (NCDs), diabetes and TB, or cancer and HIV. Indeed, out of every three adults globally lives with one or more chronic condition. Likewise, providers and health workers struggle to meet the needs across the care continuum of patients with multiple chronic conditions. MCCs also place a significant strain on the health system and patient resources, with costs doubling with each subsequent chronic illness.

In looking towards the forthcoming UN High-Level Meeting on UHC in September, much of the discussion has focused at the global and national levels. But what does UHC mean for patients, especially those with one or more NCD or other chronic condition? This panel unpacks how UHC can be realized for patients with multiple chronic conditions and the challenges posed to providers and health systems. It will examine existing tools and resources such as generic medicines, lower-cost devices and enhanced technology to facilitate better prevention, diagnosis and adherence to care by patients with multiple chronic conditions. The panel will also explore needed partnerships and mechanisms to support patients within the framework of UHC.
