March 20, 2015 is World Oral Health Day. The March SHN webinar series will share lessons learned and program interventions from the Philippines and Tajikistan SHN programs funded by the Wrigley Company Foundation. Both programs have had great success with very different oral health policy environments. The Philippines has been able to strengthen oral health programming by supporting government policy. Whereas in Tajikistan, oral health programming is new and SC is encouraging, and in many cases starting the conversation about oral health with the government.

In The Philippines, the program is focused on oral health education and access. Children learn about oral health and hygiene and are empowered to teach peers and parents how to care for their teeth through “Child Health Promoter” activities.  The project coordinates with local health authorities and the Philippines Dental Association (PDA) to have oral health assessments done by local dentists in schools. In the Philippines the Department of Education (DepEd) passed a policy that includes oral care in the curriculum, the SHN program has been able to strengthen oral health programming in schools to support this policy.

In Tajikistan, Save the Children is recognized by the Ministry of Health as the only organization addressing oral health and hygiene education at the community and school levels. Through school health clubs children gain confidence, learn about health and hygiene and have taught their peers how to take care of their teeth through games, plays, songs, and art – sharing messages among peers and families. With a strong children’s participation component the program educates children, parents and teachers about oral health techniques while also reinforcing proper oral health behaviors.
