How cities can use 7-1-7 to strengthen health emergency preparedness and response

July 31, 2025 @ 10:00 am11:30 am

Urban centers are uniquely vulnerable to infectious disease outbreaks due to population density and mobility. The 7-1-7 target can help cities assess and improve local health emergency systems alongside national preparedness efforts.

This webinar will explore how the cities of Tucson, Arizona in the United States and Recife in Brazil have been successfully using 7-1-7 to detect, report and respond to outbreaks faster – and inspiring others to do so.

Tucson has improved outbreak detection and response timeliness in schools, congregate care facilities, and shelters – learning valuable lessons that can be applied to other urban areas. In Recife, 7-1-7 was successfully piloted during Carnaval – a mass gathering of 2.7 million people – before being incorporated into routine reporting and outbreak management to continuously enhance detection and response capabilities.

With this webinar, participants will:

  • Understand how cities can use the 7-1-7 target for planning and preparedness
  • Gain insights from Brazilian and U.S. cities on effective 7-1-7 implementation that led to broader national discussions
  • Learn strategies for using 7-1-7 as a communication tool to engage partners

Featured speakers:

  • Kate Donaldson, Senior Director of Programs, Big Cities Health Coalition, United States
  • Theresa Cullen, Health Director of Pima County Health Department, Arizona, United States
  • Beatriz Matias da Silva, Head of the Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance, Recife, Brazil

Live interpretation will be available in French, Portuguese and Spanish.
