MORE INFORMATION ABOUT STAR

Join us the special STAR Initiative satellite session hosted by Unitaid, Population Services International, Society for Family Health South Africa and the National Department of Health South Africa.

Undiagnosed HIV infection remains the major barrier to reaching the UNAIDS targets and to ending AIDS by 2030. Low knowledge of HIV status is leading to suboptimal treatment and prevention coverage among priority populations in sub-Saharan Africa and represents a key gap in the HIV response.

The HIV Self-Testing Africa (STAR) Initiative, the largest evaluation of HIV self-testing (HIVST) ever done, has generated crucial information about how to distribute HIVST products effectively and how to link self-testers with either treatment and care or prevention services—men being the major priority population for whom HIVST distribution and linkage approaches had been developed.

In this session, we will be discussing innovative community- and facility-based HIVST approaches that have been used in the six STAR countries to reach priority populations, especially men, who contribute to the largest testing gap. This session highlights lessons from HIV programs overcoming barriers to male uptake and provides an opportunity to hear from beneficiaries, service providers, planners and implementers about their experiences.

*Light refreshments will be served after the session.
