HIV/AIDS and Covid-19: Prospects for an Integrated Response

November 12, 2021

People living with HIV/AIDS are at greater risk of being infected with Covid-19, due to a range of factors, including co-morbidities. The Covid-19 pandemic has been disruptive of societies and health systems globally, as wave after wave of infections have had a direct impact on hundreds of millions of individuals. At the same time, HIV/AIDS platforms established by PEPFAR and other programs have offered an important set of resources to support the Covid-19 response, including strategic information systems, supply chain management systems, laboratory testing capacity, facilities for clinical service delivery, trained health workers, and community outreach programs. How have these disruptions affected the continuity of HIV/AIDS testing, treatment, and care? And in learning to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, how can we integrate public health approaches to HIV/AIDS and Covid-19 to ensure the best health outcomes for those affected by these conditions?

Please join the CSIS Global Health Policy Center on Friday, November 12th from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT for an exciting virtual event featuring Chris Beyrer, Desmond M. Tutu Professor in Public Health and Human Rights at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; Rebecca Martin, Vice President for Global Health and the Director of the Emory Global Health Institute at Emory University; and Mamadi Yilla, Deputy Coordinator for Multisector Relations at the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy. The discussion will highlight the effects of Covid-19 on the global response to HIV/AIDS and the prospects of an integrated response to these dual pandemics. Jeffrey L. Sturchio, CSIS Global Health Policy Center Senior Associate, will moderate the discussion.

This event is made possible by the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
