Research and innovation have an essential role in bridging the health inequality gaps worldwide. While funding for research in neglected diseases is going up, available public and private funds are limited and need to be invested in a way that best answers global public health needs.

  • How can countries decide where to invest their limited public funding? How do they prioritize? Why are some diseases getting more attention than others?
  • With private investment accounting for less than a third of global funding in neglected diseases, can we find better incentives to make this percentage grow up?
  • What is the role of emerging funders? What does it mean for the differences of investment between different diseases?
  • Is there a risk of over-reliance on the top funders – be they public or philanthropic?
  • What can be done to encourage countries to meet the recommendation of the WHO Global Strategy and Plan of Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property (GSPOA)?
  • Do we have the right data for informed investment decision-making?
  • What will the EU’s long-term vision for global health research for the next legislature look like?

At a time of change for the European Union, from the start of a new legislature to the negotiations of a new multi-annual financial framework, this POLITICO event will look into trends in global health financing and where the opportunities and gaps lie to meet global public health needs.
