Follow the Money – How can Progress Towards NCDs be Achieved?
May 24, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Organized by the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, Geneva
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM CEST
Many actors have begun to divest from health-harming industries. At the same time, many governments have introduced so-called “sin taxes” on sugary drinks and other unhealthy consumer goods, and the WHO has taken a big step in combatting trans-fats. Despite the growing burden of disease and acknowledged need to act, these measures still sometimes seem controversial. Why have so few actors taken these steps and how can we encourage and convince more actors to make sound financial choices for NCDs?
This event focuses on financial flows and their impact on NCDs, whether that is through divestment from health-harming industries, different forms of taxation of unhealthy consumption goods or the establishment of various funding mechanisms related to non-communicable diseases and their risk factors. We also want to highlight the case for sustainable investment by large investors and governments.
The upcoming UN high-level meeting on NCDs later this year provides a framework for exploring these questions and defining new ways for collaboration between different actors and stakeholders as mandated by the framework of SDGs.
