Agriculture in Wartime: Threats and Opportunities for Ukraine with Farmer Kees Huizinga, Agricultural Economist Antonina Broyaka, and USAID DAA Mark Simakovsky

Russia’s deliberate targeting of Ukraine’s agriculture sector has limited farmers’ ability to plant, harvest, store, and transport agricultural commodities that are central to the country’s economic recovery and to addressing the global food security crisis. Under the Agriculture Resilience Initiative – Ukraine (AGRI-Ukraine), USAID is bolstering Ukrainian agriculture production and exports by providing critical inputs to farmers, improving export logistics and infrastructure, increasing farmers’ access to financing, and providing drying, storage, and processing support for micro, small, and medium-sized agricultural enterprises. As the expiration of the Black Sea Grain Initiative approaches on November 19, this panel will explore how AGRI-Ukraine can help farmers withstand the war’s uncertainty, drawing on the real-time experience of Kornelis “Kees” Huizinga, a farmer with two decades of experience in Ukraine and the 2022 recipient of the Kleckner Award for Global Farm Leadership.
