Progress in reducing maternal mortality in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) has stalled in recent years. The Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s, and Adolescent’s Health, to be discussed at the 78th World Health Assembly, notes the importance of accelerating the investigation, development, and introduction of better health tools for pregnant and lactating women. Indeed, their exclusion from biomedical research has resulted in a lack of data and tools, which has, in turn, weakened the quality of health services essential for maternal and child survival, health, and well-being.

Global and national health leaders, researchers, regulators, product developers, and community advocates will assess progress and explore next steps to ensure pregnant and lactating women in LMICs are no longer left behind in the development of life-saving technologies.
