Acting on the Call

On June 25, 2014, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Governments of Ethiopia and India, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will come together for a high-level forum called Acting on the Call: Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Deaths to celebrate the progress, assess the challenges that remain and identify the steps needed to sustain momentum in the future.

Acting on the Call: Progress and Alignment
Dr. Rajiv Shah, USAID Administrator, will set the stage for where the global community is in its progress and how we need to continue momentum toward ending preventable child and maternal deaths.

Progress on A Promise Renewed
Progress from Ethiopia
Ethiopia’s Minister of Health Kesete Admasu will discuss the country’s efforts since the Call to Action and the launch of A Promise Renewed to improve child and maternal health while training and supporting health centers across the country.
Global Review
Executive Director of UNICEF, Tony Lake, will give an overview of global progress on A Promise Renewed.

DevTalks: Focusing on What Works
A series of short presentations highlighting high-impact interventions.

Doing Things Differently at USAID
Announcements and discussion on the latest updates on USAID programming.

Focusing on Newborns
A review of evidence from the recent Lancet Every Newborn Series.

Reaching All Actors
Leveraging Civil Society and the Private Sector
Members of civil society and the private sector will highlight the critical need for leveraging their strengths in order to reach the new goals.

Acting on the Call
Global health leaders will discuss how they will fulfill their commitments to end preventable child and maternal deaths.
