The COVID-19 pandemic is claiming lives across the globe and causing disruption to the delivery of primary health care services. A critical concern is that the interruption of immunization services poses a major risk for secondary outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD). The recent success of the Global Vaccine Summit 2020 – where donors made ambitious pledges to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for the next 5-year strategic period – highlights the political will and commitment of all partners to improve global vaccine systems in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This interactive talk will provide the opportunity to share strategic approaches to strengthening health systems, particularly routine immunization systems in low- and middle-income countries in light of recent global commitments for the development and deployment of novel vaccines.
This spotlight on vaccines, led by civil society actors and community voices with Gavi Alliance partners, will provide an opportunity to identify a) key priorities to maintain routine immunization in the context of COVID-19 b) new approaches to successfully deliver on Gavi’s next strategic period (Gavi 5.0), with equity as the core organising principle and c) define equitable R&D processes, and fair access to novel vaccines (when available) with the COVAX facility – to ensure life-saving vaccines remain accessible to the most vulnerable and marginalised communities.
