A Deep Dive into Financing for Routine Immunization in Africa: Focus on Nigeria, DRC and Ethiopia

July 31, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am

Investing in health is vital to saving lives and achieving prosperous and resilient societies. Healthy societies are the foundation of economic development. Outbreaks of infectious diseases, particularly large-scale outbreaks and pandemics can cause severe health and economic damage with lasting impacts.

This year we celebrate 50 years since WHO launched the Essential Programme on Immunization (EPI). A major landmark study led by WHO and published by The Lancet revealed that in the last 50 years alone, vaccines have saved 154 million lives. That’s six (6) people every minute, for five decades. As the world faces evolving challenges like climate change, pandemics and increasingly strained health systems, immunization efforts pay dividends in shaping economic, development and health outcomes for the future.

PATH in 2023 set out to assess the progress in the implementation of the Addis Declaration in ten selected countries with a focus on the financing commitments. A retrospective study on the status of immunization financing, including the factors affecting adequate financing for immunization, was conducted by reviewing secondary data from various sources including global and country-based immunization and health databases and published peer reviewed and gray literature.

The aim of this webinar is to take the participants through the findings from Nigeria, DRC and Ethiopia covering 2017–2023 and provide a platform for dialogue to ramp up advocacy efforts toward increased domestic investments in the Africa region.

Objectives:

  • Present findings on the financing of routine immunization in Nigeria, DRC, and Ethiopia from 2017 to 2023.
  • Underscore the importance of investing in immunization to urgently recoup losses in routine immunization coverage.
  • Reinvigorate advocacy efforts by the civil society organizations and partners to ramp up advocacy for increased investment in immunization to reach zero-dose, under immunized and underserved communities.

Registration to attend the webinar is required.
