A Conversation with Amb. Roman Macaya Hayes on Costa Rica’s Experience Delivering Primary Care during Covid-19

September 24, 2021

RSVP

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the provision of essential health services worldwide, including routine immunizations. Strong, community-focused primary health care programs have proven instrumental in maintaining services for non-communicable diseases, delivering maternal and newborn health care, and sustaining vaccination programs over the past eighteen months. During this period, Costa Rica has emerged as a model of how long-term investments in primary health care not only strengthen the population’s access to affordable, community-based health services but also support pandemic response.

Please join the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security on Friday, September 24, from 9:30 am – 10:15 am EDT, for a conversation with Ambassador Román Macaya Hayes, Executive President of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, and Katherine E. Bliss, Senior Fellow with the CSIS Global Health Policy Center. They will discuss Costa Rica’s path to prioritizing primary health care programs, the nation’s experience delivering health services at the community level during the Covid-19 pandemic, and lessons that may be relevant for other countries seeking to strengthen their health systems and at the same time improve preparedness for future outbreaks.

This event is made possible by the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
