WHA 76 Agenda Item 13.5: Draft global strategy on infection prevention and control
GHC supported by WaterAid, appreciates the opportunity to comment on this agenda item.
Infection prevention and control is crucial to protecting patients, health workers, and visitors to healthcare facilities by preventing avoidable infections, such as those caused by antimicrobial-resistant, epidemic, and pandemic-prone pathogens. Infection, prevention and control measures are a critical piece of a strong health system, which is well-equipped to prevent, prepare for, and respond to health emergencies.
We welcome the focus of the global strategy on infection prevention and control on interventions known to be highly cost-effective and representing a “best buy” approach, including ensuring access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in healthcare facilities as a primary tool of prevention.
Further, the global strategy on infection prevention and control should ensure adequate monitoring, resourcing, and coordination for resilient health systems and stronger preparation for the next pandemic.
