Advocacy Update

May 28, 2024

The Mutli-Stakeholder Hearing in preparation for the General Assembly High-level Meeting (HLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance was held on May 15. During this meeting, non-state actors were able to:

  • Give statements on their priorities for the HLM and AMR
  • Provide key asks/recommendations for language they would like to see included in the political declaration on AMR that will be approved at the UN General Assembly

The upcoming High Level Meeting on AMR is a key moment to highlight the connection between AMR and Universal Health Care (UHC). The two are interlinked; without UHC, access to appropriate and effective antibiotics will not be available to everyone. Advocates can use the UCH2030 key messages in the lead up to the HLM on AMR. The CSEM has also created templates that can be used to advocate key messages on social media

On May 9, Senator Bill Cassidy, the ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a white paper with proposals intended to reform the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by, among other things, maintaining a balanced research portfolio, streamlining the peer review process, address workforce recruiting and retention, and increasing transparency. The white paper is indicative of increased Congressional scrutiny facing the organization.

The Summit of the Future, taking place in September, will bring together world leaders to forge international consensus on how to deliver a better present and safeguard the future. The primary outcome document will be the Pact for the Future, a Declaration on Future Generations and a Global Digital Compact

As the conversations around this take place, Member states must understand the link between UHCand the Declaration’s goal: build a future that will ensure all people can live healthy, peaceful, prosperous and fulfilling lives in a sustainable world. It is critical that health, particularly UHC, is present throughout the outcome document.

To that end, UHC2030 and partners are working together to advocate for health and UHC in the lead up to the Summit of the Future. Advocates can use this toolkit to support these efforts.
