Join us on May 15 at 2:30 PM EDT for the final WHA policy scrum on the U.S Delegation’s Priorities for the 71st World Health Assembly. The webinar will feature remarks from Garrett Grigsby, Director of the Office of Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Please register online and submit your questions in advance.
GHC’s WHA policy “scrum” series originated in early 2015 with the goal of bringing together our community around specific global health priorities being address by the WHA. We use the word “scrum” as it relates to the sport of rugby. In this context, “scrum” refers to a group of players uniting to gain possession of the ball. Similarly, our global health advocates huddle together during our WHA policy scrums to share insights and intelligence with each other as well as prepare key messages and strategies for the upcoming WHA and ultimately organize ourselves so that we can be more effective advocates at WHA and beyond.
BECOMING BETTER ADVOCATES: Prior WHA policy scrums have featured global health experts predicting how certain WHA agenda item debates will progress. This year, we will focus less on forecasts and more on the practical tools needed to better advocate for key issues. During each webinar, featured guest speakers will provide brief remarks on the context of their issue and then offer ways to engage and advocate.
CROSS-CUTTING FOCUS: This year’s policy scrum webinar series will include the following topics:
– WHO-CSO engagement
– Strengthening Health Systems
– Integration of Health Issues
– U.S. government Intel Sharing
TIMING: The policy scrums will occur bi-weekly on Tuesdays from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM EDT leading up to WHA. Specific topics and speakers will be announced in advance of the webinar via GHC’s website, newsletter and social media channels, so be sure to follow GHC on Twitter (@GlobalHealthOrg) and Facebook (@globalhealthcouncil) for the latest updates.
QUESTIONS: Please share any questions for speakers in advance of the webinar to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The first scrum was held on March 27 regarding “WHO-Civil Society Engagement: Efforts to maximize engagement with external actors” and was led by Kate Dodson, Vice President for Global Health Strategy, United Nations Foundation. You can catch up on the webinar recording and access the presentation.

On May 8, the third WHA Policy Scrum focused on communications (e.g., social media alerts) and logistics (e.g. picking up your credentials).
