Dr. Christine Sow participated in the Global Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the Director of CDC, held in Atlanta on October 22. Dr. Sow joined global health experts from academic institutions, other government agencies and U.S. public health departments among others, to hear from CDC leadership on progress of and challenges to the work of the CDC’s Center for Global Health. Specifically, topics covered in the October meeting included the Global Health Security Agenda (including the Ebola response), International Laboratory Safety and an update on PEPFAR from the new Director of the Division of Global HIV/AIDS (DGHA) for the CDC, Dr. Shannon Hader.
The GWG meets twice a year to advise the CGH, usually just prior to the meeting of the Advisory Committee to the Director. Notably at this meeting the impact of the Ebola crisis was examined throughout the day’s agenda, both regarding CDC’s direct role in the global response as well as in terms of long-range planning and strategy to improve crisis preparedness in the U.S. and abroad. The next GWG meeting is scheduled for April 2015.
