Universal Health Coverage is a critical Sustainable Development Goal target that requires all individuals to have access to health services that are both affordable and of good quality. Often, it is women, children, and adolescents who face financial hardship most acutely due to their high health care needs and low access to financial resources.
Achieving this SDG will demand financial strategies that go beyond donor funding and will require political leadership, social consensus, and realistic local public financing commitments. Addressing the unfinished MDG agendas of child, maternal, and neonatal health and of non-communicable diseases will demand increased and coordinated investments in quality primary health care services, while reducing the role of inefficient and inequitable private financing such as out of pocket payments.
