Breakfast Briefing on Maternal Health & Clean Energy in Somaliland with Edna Adan
May 8, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am EDT
Organized by Sierra Club
9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
50 F St. NW, Suite 800
Join guest speaker Edna Adan, Founder & Director of the Edna Adan Hospital & University, and Former First Lady of Somaliland for a discussion on maternal health and clean energy.
Somaliland has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. One in eleven children die in infancy and nearly 4,000 women die in childbirth annually. This tragedy is largely due to the civil war which caused the death or departure of nearly all the country’s health care professionals. Founded as a maternity hospital, over the past 15 years the Edna Adan Hospital and University has grown into a leading referral institution, treating obstetrical, surgical, medical and pediatric cases from across the Horn of Africa.
The Edna Adan Hospital also recently received the first award from a partnership launched by ImpactPPA and Earth Day Network to expand their clean energy footprint. This project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All initiative, which seeks to provide universal access to sustainable energy by 2030 with a focus on healthcare centers as first priority. This goal is especially important in regions like sub-Saharan Africa, where just 28 percent of healthcare facilities report having reliable access to electricity.
Join Edna Adan for a discussion of women’s rights, health care and clean energy. Learn how clean energy and maternal health are intrinsically linked, and how this hospital is achieving result. Edna has been named among the 100 most influential Africans and is recognized internationally as a pioneer of woman’s health and education.
