Committee on the U.S. Commitment to Global Health
The Institute of Medicine Committee on the U.S. Commitment to Global Health is conducting a study to examine and articulate the case for why multiple agencies from government and the private sector in the U.S. should make a deeper commitment to global health. The committee will present a brief report outlining a vision for a U.S. government commitment to global health, which will be released in December 2008 to coincide with the U.S. Presidential transition. The committee’s full report will be released in April 2009.
On the afternoon of July 21, the committee will hold a meeting in the Keck Center of the National Academies (500 Fifth Street, NW Washington, DC). The meeting is open to the public with advance registration and will include panel presentations from a range of experts on opportunities to strengthen health systems in low- and middle-income countries. Additionally, on July 7, in the same location, a working group of the committee will hold an all-day meeting on gaps and priorities in U.S. contributions to global disease challenges, building off of the work of the Disease Control Priorities Project, with approximately 20 outside speakers. This working group meeting is also open to the public with advance registration.
For more information about the committee, or to view agendas and register for these events, please visit the project website 'www.iom.edu' or contact Kate Meck at kmeck@nas.edu or 202-334-1812. |

Partners Forum
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
10 - 11:30 am
Global Health Council
1111 19th Street, NW
Suite 1120
Washington, D.C. 20036
Neglected tropical diseases have afflicted humanity since time immemorial and, in their long histories, have acquired notoriety as disabling and deforming diseases. Today, those most affected are the poorest populations - often living in remote, rural areas, urban slums or in conflict zones.
Approximately 1 billion people suffer from one or more neglected tropical disease. These diseases have a low profile and status among public health priorities and there is a lack of reliable statistics. Please join Dr. Lorenzo Savioli, director of the World Health Organization's Neglected and Tropical Disease Department to discuss the current state of affairs regarding global neglected tropical diseases, progress made, continuing challenges and the road ahead to strengthen the global response to NTDs.
